Sigma DP1 review

The two seem completely at odds with each other – image quality and size. It's been a rule of thumb since the invention of photography that a larger camera with a larger recording area (be it silver or silicon) will – all else being equal – produce superior image quality. And so photographers continue to schlep around cameras and lenses that weigh them down; all in a search for the optimum image.
On the other hand, we all would like to be free from encumbrances. To walk around a foreign city (or a dangerous one) without the weight and sometimes attention drawing of a DSLR would be nice. To take a hike in the woods with ones spouse, able to photograph the mists of early morning or a chance encounter with a deer, without the baggage (both literal and metaphorical) that a DSLR involves is something many of us wish for. » Sigma software stops DP1 going green
By Manthos Tzorbatzakis | Published 04/8/2008 | Digital Cameras , Sigma | Unrated
Sigma DP1Sigma has announced a series of firmware and software updates for its Foveon-based cameras. The update to its Photo Pro software (for both Mac and Windows), corrects the green tint that could appear at the corner of some DP1 images, it also improves the color reproduction of RAW images from the SD14 DSLR. New firmware for the DP1 adds composition grids for most shooting modes, too. Read the whole article here. You can buy the camera here
» Sigma DP-1 review
By Manthos Tzorbatzakis | Published 03/26/2008 | Digital Cameras Reviews , Sigma | Unrated

We've been waiting for Sigma's DP-1 digital camera for approximately 18 months. First announced at Photokina in September 2006, it has been withheld from the market through what Sigma describes as "unforeseen image quality problems which resulted in a requirement to change the specification of the camera's imaging pipeline". But it's here now - and a very interesting camera it has turned out to be.
The DP-1's metal camera body is sturdy with an angular styling and clean lines that are reminiscent of Ricoh's GR Digital models.  Although the dimpled areas on the front and rear panels are well positioned, we'd have liked a slightly better grip. A small moulded protrusion would have provided greater comfort and (perhaps) allowed a few more components to be packed into the camera. Unfortunately, the plastic lens cap supplied with the review camera didn't match its build quality and couldn't be used when the lens hood was in place. You can read the whole review here and you can buy the camera here.

Since it was first announced a year and a half ago, Sigma's DP1 (street: $799) has been creating buzz. Yes, that's the same base Foveon X3 chip as its DSLR brother, the SD14, taking up a whopping .5 x .8 square inch of real estate in this compact camera. But the DP1 has all new microlenses, a new Three-layer Responsive Ultimate Engine ("TRUE") processing, a specially designed 28mm f/4 equivalent lens (5 groups/6 elements), a new version of Sigma's Photo Pro RAW conversion software (v2.4 Win/v3.1Mac), and full manual controls, among other high-end features. And don't forget about the thousands upon thousands of Web postings on message boards and blogs discussing the camera -- not to mention a drag time from announcement to availability that can be best described as glacial. » Sigma DP1 Alive and Well
By Manthos Tzorbatzakis | Published 01/31/2008 | Digital Cameras , Sigma | Unrated

The last time we heard anything about the long-delayed Sigma DP1 compact camera was back in November last year, when Sigma announced that they were going back to the drawing board. Now the company has published a teaser advert for the DP1 with the immortal tagline, “The worldwide debut, soon”. How soon is now? asked The Smiths. Could the Sigma DP1 appear at PMA as a fully-fledged, working camera, or will we have to be content with another pre-production sample, as at last year’s PMA show? Why is anyone bothered - well, remember, the Sigma DP1 could be the first ever compact camera to feature an APS-C size sensor, or as Sigma are describing it, “The camera that no-one’s made before”. Now all they have to do is get it out of the factory door… via photographyblog.com

Panasonic

If patience is a virtue, photographers shopping for a new Sigma DSLR are saints. After all, it’s been three years since the last Sigma digital (the SD10), and it was more than six months between the announcement and availability of the new Sigma SD14 ($1,600, street, body only).
Clearly, a truly unique camera takes time. And the SD14 is unique. It’s the first and only DSLR to use a second-generation Foveon X3 sensor, which has a 1.7X lens factor, boasts 14.1 megapixels, and is promoted as a color-accurate, detail-obsessed, low-noise alternative to the CMOS and CCD sensors used in other DSLRs.
For more on the X3, see the McNamara Report. For how the SD14 handled our standardized tests in the field and the Pop Photo Lab,

Sigma SD14

Sigma releases the second firmware update for the SD14 digital SLR camera. Firmware update version 1.02 should be installed in SD14 cameras with firmware version 1.00 or 1.01 and provides following improvements:
1) Corrects the phenomenon that AdobeRGB from sRGB setting was not saved when the camera was turned off.
2) Improved the exposure of the built in flash...

Casio EX-V7 Camera

One of the easiest and coolest camera hacks we've seen lately is possible with the just-released Sigma SD14. And best of all, it doesn't involve specialized tools, major camera dissection, or any potential warranty voiding actions.
By simply removing the infrared (IR) cutoff filter from this digital SLR, the camera gains the ability to capture IR plus visible spectrum images. And with the addition of an IR filter, you can go straight to IR-only capture.
Why would anyone want to do this? Foliage and water can have dramatic shifts when captured in infrared, and make for impressive IR monochromes. As seen by the photos in
this gallery, IR imaging can bring out cloud details in an overcast sky or make a building in the background sharp despite atmospheric haze. IR imaging brings to light a world that's hidden just beyond the edges of our vision. Read the whole article here

Sigma SD14

Sigma releases the first firmware update for the SD14 digital SLR camera. The new version offers these enhancements: Sensor cleaning can now be done by powering the camera from the battery, improved speed setting and a slow sync mode for 'A' mode flash photography, and improved image quality when reviewing images on the rear LCD. The update also corrects these problems: Over exposure when using flash, incompatibility with FAT16 CF cards, intermittent camera freeze, and more. Read the whole article here

» Sigma publishes white papers on the SD14 digital SLR with Foveon sensor
By Manthos Tzorbatzakis | Published 01/20/2007 | Digital Cameras , Sigma | Unrated

Sigma publishes 2 white papers describing how the Foveon image sensor captures images in the Sigma SD14 digital SLR. (Note that availability of the SD14 has been delayed until late February or early March.)  In the papers a comparison with conventional image sensors is made and you will find information on how this relates to "pixel count" and how it may affect image and color resolution. The more technical version of the papers discusses the adaptation of camera test procedures to do justice to this unique image sensor... Read the full article here
